3 Ways to Keep Holiday Cheer In the Office All Year

The time of year following the holidays is ideal for reinvigoration, new beginnings and continued joy. After the most spirited time of the year, there can often be a bit of a slump in cheeriness levels, since the holidays are such happy seasons.

Fortunately, there are ways to keep cheer around your business all year. You have the power to do it. Here are three of my favorite tips to keeping enthusiasm alive all year long:

  1. Dedicate time or funds to charity. Part of what makes the holiday season such a wonderful time is that people typically try to make an effort to do good for others and their community. Organize regular volunteer dates with employees or let them choose a different charity to donate to every month. It’s never a bad time to help others and chances are it will improve morale in the work place.
  2. Make sure employees know they’re appreciated. The holidays are a time for showing gratitude, whether by simply telling others that you’re thankful for them or by giving gifts. How can people not be in a great mood when they feel valued? Why not carry this on throughout the year? Your employees will love coming to work if they know not only is their work is important, but that they are important. Make it a point to tell people when they’re doing superb work, and encourage employees to do the same for one another.
  3. Let your employees put their own decorative touch on their office spaces. There’s always something to look forward to – the New Year, Valentine’s Day, St. Patty’s Day, Easter, Fiesta for those of us in San Antonio, summer, Halloween, Thanksgiving, awareness months, etc. Having a festive work space just might help lift spirits, especially if employees feel a sense of ownership in how it looks. Think about it – isn’t it great when lights, trees, wreaths, snowflakes, pumpkins and shamrocks pop up? Doesn’t it make you feel young all over again? You can recreate that feeling for your employees all year long. It also provides a delivery of cheer to those who your employees serve. I know our residents love it when decorations are abounding at Morningside. Whether you lead a restaurant, medical, clinical office or retail, you can make every month spirit-filled.

What’s the point of all this? Why do you need to keep holiday cheer alive? It’s simple. If the feeling of the holiday spirit is there year-round, you probably have a fantastic work culture and one that is noticed by employees. If you show you care, they in turn will do the same by performing at their best. Do what you can to keep the holiday spirit alive and well from January to December, year after year.
